Elder Clip

Have I watched the video clip 5 times now. I only picked up on 4 words Giga-waabamin, asemaa, miigwech, and geget. On the fifth time I heard language and seen the dog laying on the couch. From this clip I was under the impression that both parties felt a bit uncomfortable or maybe just didn't know each other well. The Elder obviously new the women was going to ask for something as soon as she offered her tobacco. The setting took place at the elders home. What they were doing is conversing and their interaction as a stated above they seemed uncomfortable in the beginning. After the lady asked her to for help learning the language she seemed relieved. There was a quiet pause at the end. I moment of uncomfortable silence. I love the dialoge without it I would have been lost. These programs are hopefully going to teach me new words and phrases.

  1. Amanda,
I showed Larry (Amik) Smallwood the lesson. Amik was impressed but the comment that he made is that Rose (the old lady) had a strong Red Lake dialect.
